About this postcard

A view east along 2nd Avenue at its intersection with 19th Street in Birmingham, Alabama, with multi-story brick commercial blocks lining both sides of the street, trolley tracks curving through the roadway, and horse-drawn wagons and pedestrians in the foreground. Signs for a drug store and other storefronts are visible on the right-hand buildings. Birmingham was founded in 1871 as a planned industrial city built around iron and steel production and grew rapidly into one of the leading manufacturing centers of the New South, which this busy downtown streetscape reflects.
