About this postcard

A Soviet Ukrainian commemorative card for the 300th anniversary of the 1654 Pereiaslav agreement. The red flag of the USSR, with hammer, sickle and star, is crossed with the red-and-blue flag of the Ukrainian SSR above a large "300" set in a golden laurel wreath, and a red ribbon below carries the dates 1654 and 1954. The Ukrainian caption reads "300 років возз'єднання України з Росією." The tercentenary was a major state campaign of the Khrushchev years, framing hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky's submission to Tsar Alexei as a voluntary union of brother peoples. The same year, 1954, the Soviet government transferred Crimea from the Russian SFSR to the Ukrainian SSR, and the anniversary imagery was widely circulated in print and on postal stationery.
