A Happy New Year sailboat greeting, Brooklyn, NY, 1915

About this postcard

The card's printed scene shows a small sailboat on calm water, with a house and trees on the opposite shore, set in an oval and surrounded by floral garlands. The verse reads 'With greetings true from your friend to you.' New Year's cards of the early 1900s often paired such sentimental lines with scenic or floral vignettes. Postmarked in Brooklyn in January 1915, the card was used for a personal invitation. The sender, Mac, thanks the recipient for a card and proposes a moonlight hike that Saturday, meeting at Prospect Park Station at nine o'clock 'if care to go.' Prospect Park was a familiar gathering point for Brooklyn outings, and the note shows the postcard as a practical way to make a quick plan across the city.
