About this postcard
A paved highway curves through the eroded buttes and striped clay formations of the South Dakota Badlands, marked by a line of white guard posts along the outer edge of the bend. The caption calls it "A Modern Road in an Old Land," contrasting the new motor highway with the ancient, heavily eroded landscape. The Badlands' banded layers of volcanic ash and sediment, laid down tens of millions of years ago and carved by wind and water, made the region a well-known scenic detour for motorists traveling across the northern plains in the 1920s and 1930s.
