A Scene in "Old Tucson", Arizona, circa 1940s

About this postcard

A staged Western street scene at Old Tucson: a low adobe mission-style building with a cross atop its bell niche stands before desert hills, with a man in cowboy dress beside a wooden wagon and two figures in period costume nearby, a saguaro cactus at right. Old Tucson was built in 1939 as a film set for the Columbia Pictures western "Arizona," using reproductions of 1860s Tucson buildings, and later operated as a tourist attraction and location for numerous Western films and television shows. The linen-textured card dates from the mid-20th century, when the set was a popular roadside attraction outside Tucson.
