The A. Shuman estate in Beverly, Mass., is shown as a large white clapboard mansion with many windows and red-and-white striped awnings, set among mature trees on a broad lawn. A curved brick balustrade topped with stone urns edges the terrace in the foreground, and a row of small clipped evergreens lines the grass. Beverly was one of the North Shore towns where Boston families kept summer estates in the early 1900s, and the formal grounds here fit that pattern.
