About this postcard
A large white mansion sits back among trees and lawns, its porches and windows shaded by red-and-white striped awnings. A low brick balustrade runs across the foreground, marking the edge of the grounds. Beverly, on Massachusetts's North Shore, was a summer colony for prosperous Boston families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and estates of this kind lined both the shoreline and the wooded roads inland. The awnings and shaded porches suggest a house used in the warm months, when the household and its guests moved out from the city.
