A two-story frame house with a wraparound porch stands among mature trees, with a row of small tourist cabins behind it. Signs on the cabins read "SHADY" and "LODGE". The layout is typical of the roadside tourist courts that served motorists in the 1920s and 1930s, when inexpensive cabins offered an alternative to hotels. Abbott's Shady Lodge sat on Route 63 south of Oskaloosa, Iowa, a location that put it on a main north-south highway through the state.
