About this postcard

A view from the rocky summit of Mount Washington, looking out over a sea of clouds tinted pink, gold, and violet at sunrise or sunset. A dark green mountain shoulder slopes down at the left, with a rail line running along the rocky foreground. The printed caption describes clouds that "envelope the valleys" and hang the mountainsides in misty draperies before tearing apart to expose peaks "sharp as spears." Mount Washington, the highest summit in the northeastern United States, was already a well-established tourist destination by this time, reached by the Mount Washington Cog Railway and the carriage road, and known for weather far more severe than the calm cloud sea shown here. The sender's short note home reports a good time at camp, written in high summer.
