Address side of a 1-cent Jefferson postal card, Fraser, Michigan, 1940

About this postcard

This scan shows the address side of a used United States postal card: a printed green 1-cent Jefferson stamp is cancelled by a machine postmark reading "FRASER / MICH. / MAY / 31 / P.M. / 1940," and the card is addressed in ink to Mr. J. J. Province, Jr., Shinnston, W. Va., Route 2. The one-cent Jefferson postal card was the standard domestic postal card of the era, the U.S. postal card rate remaining at one cent from the 1870s until it was raised to two cents in 1952. No picture side is present in this scan, so the depicted subject cannot be identified.

May 9, 1940 Dear Joe, It's as cold as "blue blazes" and I didn't bring a coat with me. I have a couple of sweaters though. He didn't drive over an inch of dry pavement and it rained every minute of the day. Dad went dry every 40 or 50 miles and we had to stop and let him tank up so we didn't get home until about 10:30. Dad built a fire in the furnace with papers and kindling took the chill off. We're going downtown (Detroit) in a minute so - So long. Lavila
