Aerating Water Wheel at Blue Hole, Castalia, Ohio, 1945

About this postcard

The aerating water wheel stands at the Blue Hole, a spring-fed pool near Castalia, Ohio, with flowering shrubs and dense green foliage behind it. A rustic sign identifies the wheel. The spring discharges about seven million gallons a day, enough for a city of 75,000, but the water is described as "dead-devoid of oxygen." The wheel lifts the water so it falls over a cascade and picks up oxygen, making the pool habitable for fish. The Blue Hole was a roadside stop six miles west of Sandusky, open day and night, and promotional text placed it in "Ohio's Lake Erie Vacationland." Castalia's cold springs also supported fish hatchery work in the area.
