Aerial view of Bonneville Dam, Columbia River Highway, circa 1938

About this postcard

Aerial view over the Bonneville Dam area on the Columbia River, with the dam, spillway, navigation lock, and the roads and forested hills of the gorge around them. The Columbia River Highway follows the river through the scene. Bonneville was the first of the large federal dams on the Columbia, built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s, and its lock carried boats past the rapids that had long blocked navigation upstream. The Columbia River Highway, laid out as a scenic drive through the gorge and finished in the early 1920s, was still the main road past the dam site when this view was made.
