About this postcard
Aerial view looking down on downtown Houston's business district, with tall office towers and mid-rise commercial blocks filling the frame. Rail yards, warehouses, and outlying buildings spread toward the horizon. The printed caption calls Houston "One of the Nation's Fastest Growing Cities" and points to its man-made port, about fifty miles from the Gulf of Mexico, as the engine of its shipping and industrial growth. That port was the Houston Ship Channel, opened in 1914, which helped make the inland city a major oil and shipping center.
