About this postcard

The aerial view shows Daytona Beach spread across the mainland and the barrier island, with the Halifax River filling the center and the Atlantic Ocean at the upper right. Bridges connect the two sides of the city. Printed labels identify the ocean and river, and the caption notes that Daytona Beach sits on both sides of the half-mile-wide Halifax River, part of the Inland Water Way along Florida's East Coast. By the early 1940s Daytona Beach was an established winter resort and a center for beach racing, and its riverfront and oceanfront were familiar postcard subjects. The broad Halifax River and the long ocean beach gave the city its distinctive layout between the mainland and the sea.
