Afternoon Tea by Jules Stewart, Kugler's, Philadelphia, circa 1930

About this postcard
Jules Stewart's painting "Afternoon Tea" shows a well-dressed group of men, women, and children gathered around a tea table in a comfortable period interior. A patterned rug fills the foreground, and a dog sits near the bottom edge. The figures wear the formal dress of the turn of the century, and the scene is arranged as an easy, sociable hour. Kugler's Chestnut Street Restaurant displayed the painting in the Main Hall of its Widener Building location, where the caption says it was a favorite with diners who lingered. The restaurant used the work, and the other oils on permanent exhibition there, to present itself as a place where a meal came with art and a bit of old-fashioned social atmosphere.
