About this postcard
An airplane view looks down on downtown Asheville, North Carolina, with its grid of commercial blocks, a domed courthouse-like building, and taller office towers set against the Blue Ridge Mountains under a pale sky. Asheville is billed as "In the Land of the Sky," a nickname tied to the drifting clouds, frequent sunshine, and mile-high mountain panorama that define the region. The city's high plateau setting made it a railroad and resort center, and by the 1920s it had a substantial downtown of Art Deco and Beaux-Arts buildings, much of which survives.
