Airplane view of Lynchburg's football stadium, Lynchburg, Virginia, circa 1940

About this postcard

An airplane view looks down on a large oval football stadium, its concrete grandstands wrapping almost entirely around the gridiron. A small red-roofed structure sits on the west side, with scattered outbuildings and trees on the surrounding grounds. The printed caption reads "Airplane View of Lynchburg's Football Stadium, Lynchburg, Va.," and the card's text calls it "The finest Football Stadium in Virginia," erected at a cost of $300,000 with a seating capacity of 15,300. Aerial views of new stadiums were a common way to advertise civic scale and modern amenities in the 1930s and 1940s.
