Alcova Dam on the North Platte River, Wyoming, circa 1940

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

An elevated view of Alcova Dam, a concrete arch-gravity structure spanning the North Platte River gorge, with the reservoir behind it and treeless brown hills beyond. Alcova Dam was built by the Bureau of Reclamation in the mid-1930s as part of the Casper-Alcova (later Kendrick) Project and was completed in 1938, impounding water for irrigation and power in central Wyoming. The card's linen-era coloring and the curving access roads on the far bank match the dam's early years of operation.
