About this postcard

The Alexian Brothers Hospital occupies a corner at Racine and Webster Avenues, a four-story red brick block with rows of tall windows, large shade trees, and a low fence along the sidewalk. A few small figures pass in front. The Alexian Brothers were a Catholic congregation devoted to nursing and care of the sick, poor, and dying. The order began in the Low Countries in the Middle Ages and had established communities in American cities by the nineteenth century. Its Chicago hospital served the North Side when religious congregations ran many of the city's hospitals and charitable institutions.
