About this postcard

A long row of whitewashed, arched wall vaults in Old St. Louis Cemetery, New Orleans, each niche decorated with wreaths, bouquets, and potted flowers for All Saints' Day. The above-ground oven vault walls are typical of New Orleans burial practice, where the high water table made subterranean graves impractical. The cemetery dates from 1788 and is the city's oldest surviving cemetery; its graves include early French and Spanish settlers and the pirate Dominick You, likely Dominique You. All Saints' Day, November 1, is when Catholic families in the city clean and decorate family tombs.
