American Falls from Goat Island, Niagara Falls, NY, 1916

About this postcard

The American Falls seen from Goat Island, the water dropping in a wide curtain into the gorge, with a small observation point at the left brink. The printed caption singles out Luna Island, the low scrap of rock and greenery between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, noting that it can be reached only by a footbridge from Goat Island and that the churning water was slowly eating it away. Goat Island has been the standard viewing ground since a bridge from the mainland opened in 1817, and the surrounding reservation became Niagara Falls State Park in 1885, the oldest state park in the country. The sender was in Buffalo on business and made the trip out to the falls, writing to a friend in Hartford City, Indiana, that they were wonderful.
