About this postcard

A large group of women in white uniforms and caps, American Red Cross canteen workers, pose in front of a frame building with a signboard partly visible as "CHBURG." The printed caption names the scene as the American Red Cross Canteen in Lynchburg, Virginia. During World War I, Red Cross canteens at railroad stations served meals and comfort to soldiers passing through, and Lynchburg's rail connections made the town a regular stop for troops and travelers. The card was mailed in August 1918, near the end of the war, when such canteens were a common sight along troop routes.
