About this postcard
A group of Amish children poses in front of the Old Village Store in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania. Two girls in plain dresses and bonnets sit on a bench at the left; five boys in straw hats, suspenders, and dark trousers stand on the walk. The store is a barn-red frame building with Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs and a lantern beside the open door. The printed greeting calls the region "The Amish Country," the label that drew visitors to Lancaster County. By the mid-20th century, the county's Amish communities were a familiar subject for postcards and roadside tourism, and the children's traditional dress and the store's folk decoration present that rural life for outside viewers.
