Amphitheatre of the Wilds, Badlands, South Dakota, circa 1930

About this postcard

Eroded badland buttes and castellated rock walls rise above a grassy flat, their fluted spires suggesting the tiers and columns of a ruined amphitheatre. The caption names the formation the "Amphitheatre of the Wilds" in the South Dakota Bad Lands. The surrounding landscape is built from layered river and floodplain sediments, later cut by water and wind into sharp ridges and pinnacles. Badlands National Monument was established in 1939 and redesignated a national park in 1978; scenic formations like this became common subjects for postcards sold along Black Hills tourist routes.
