About this postcard
Sepia aerial view of Anacortes on Fidalgo Island, the town spread along its waterfront and harbor with mill and cannery buildings at the shore, and the snow-covered cone of Mount Baker faint on the horizon. In the 1940s Anacortes was a small fishing and lumber port on Puget Sound, its fleet and mills tied to the water that surrounds it. The card was mailed in May 1944 by a motor machinist's mate stationed at the naval air station on Whidbey Island, across the water, to a friend in Leechburg, Pennsylvania. He reports that his wife and baby are doing fine and passes along hellos from Palmina to the folks and the gang. It traveled without a stamp under the free mail privilege for service members.
