A close view of the stepped, terraced travertine formations of Angel Terrace, their cascading ledges tinted in shades of cream, yellow, orange and rust, with a hillside of dark conifers and bare trunks behind. Angel Terrace is one of the hot-spring terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, built up over time by calcium carbonate deposited from the cooling mineral water. The vivid coloring comes from heat-loving bacteria and algae living in the flowing water.
