About this postcard
A close view of Angel Terrace, its stepped travertine ledges cascading down in bands of cream, yellow, orange, and rust. Dark conifers and bare trunks rise on the hillside behind. The terrace is one of the hot-spring formations at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, built up as calcium carbonate settles from cooling mineral water. Heat-loving bacteria and algae give the flowing water its coloring. The caption places the terrace in the southern part of the Terrace Mountains, about 1,000 feet south of Orange Geyser, and singles it out among the park's thermal wonders for delicate coloring and beautiful formations.
