About this postcard

A narrow brick-paved alley runs between rows of old above-ground tombs and wall vaults in St. Louis Cemetery, New Orleans. Flowers are set along the path, and ironwork gates stand at the right. The cemetery, laid out in 1789 just outside the French Quarter, is the city's oldest surviving burial ground. Its surface vaults and family tombs reflect the high water table, and the wall vaults along the left side of the view served as a boundary fence. The printed caption calls St. Louis Cemetery the oldest in the state and explains that "the walls on the left act as a fence, and in them the cheapest burials are made."
