About this postcard
A brick-paved alley lined with rows of old above-ground tombs and wall vaults in St. Louis Cemetery, New Orleans, with flowers set out along the path and ironwork gates at right. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, laid out in 1789 just outside the old French Quarter, is the city's oldest surviving cemetery and is famous for its dense grid of whitewashed surface vaults and family tombs, a burial style dictated by the high water table. The cemetery holds the grave of voodoo priestess Marie Laveau and a noted pyramid tomb, and it remains a popular subject for postcard views of the city.
