About this postcard

An aerial view taken from an airplane shows the Arlington Memorial Amphitheatre, a white marble ellipse set on a rise in Arlington, Virginia, overlooking Washington. The temple-like front faces across the Potomac toward the Lincoln Memorial, and the central space is turfed and open to the sky, with a columned entrance portico and red-tiled roof in view. Directly in front is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, dedicated in 1921. The printed caption notes the building cost $1,000,000. Dedicated in 1920 and designed by Thomas Hastings, the amphitheater hosts the nation's Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances.
