The bronze figure of Armed Freedom crowns the dome of the U.S. Capitol, shown in profile with a crested helmet, classical robes, a sheathed sword, and a laurel wreath. Thomas Crawford designed the statue, which was raised into place in 1863 and stands 19 feet 6 inches high. The card's caption calls her "Armed Freedom," while its printed text uses "Armed Liberty." By the time this card was mailed, the figure had become a familiar symbol of the Union and of Washington's skyline.
