A large brick armory with a crenellated facade, arched entrance, and broad steps stands at a curving street corner. A smaller house and a tall chimney-topped tower rise on the slope at right. The castle-like front is typical of National Guard armories built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when such buildings served as drill halls and public gathering places. Waltham was then a watchmaking and manufacturing center, and the armory gave the city a civic and military landmark.
White border; sepia-toned print (printed card, not a real-photo print); printed caption "Armory, Waltham, Mass."; published by Underwood & Underwood, New York and London; series P6381; surface scratches and marks in the sky area; light corner wear and faint album scuffs on the front. Divided back. Postmark: WALTHAM MASS. OCT 13 1914 (time not legible).
