Auto Tree, Big Basin Redwood State Park, CA, circa 1960

About this postcard

A stand of massive coast redwoods rises beside a sandy dirt path, with a split-rail fence and a small sign at the right and dense evergreen forest behind. The caption identifies the tree as the Auto Tree, a redwood large enough for an automobile to drive through, one of the novelty trees that drew motor tourists to California's redwood parks. Big Basin Redwood State Park, established in 1902, is California's oldest state park and preserves old-growth coast redwoods.
