Avalon harbor and Catalina Casino, Santa Catalina Island, California, circa 1940

About this postcard

Elevated view over Avalon's harbor on Santa Catalina Island, with the town and beach along the left shore, a large steamer and many small boats at anchor, and the circular Catalina Casino building on the point at right below the island's brown hills. Avalon, the island's only incorporated city, grew as a resort after the Banning brothers and later William Wrigley Jr. developed steamship service from the mainland; the Casino, with its ballroom and theater, opened in 1929 and became the harbor's landmark. The card's caption calls the bay 'Bay of Moons,' a romantic name for the crescent-shaped harbor.
