About this postcard

A tree-shaded avenue lined with rows of white canvas tents pitched on wooden platforms, with a large multi-story frame building rising behind them and a low rail fence along the street in the foreground. Ocean Grove, founded in 1869 as a Methodist camp-meeting ground on the New Jersey shore, became famous for just this sort of tent colony, where families summered in canvas dwellings set among permanent cottages and frame boarding houses. The card's own caption names the scene simply as "An Avenue of Tent Dwellers."
