About this postcard
A museum diorama reconstructs an Azilian boar hunt in the rocky country around Mas d'Azil, Ariège, France. Two prehistoric hunters close in with spears, accompanied by dogs, while a wild boar moves through the terrain. The Azilians were late Stone Age hunting people named for the type site at Mas d'Azil; the caption dates them to about 12,000 years ago, when dogs were being domesticated. Their art, unlike the realism of the earlier Cro-Magnons, relied on conventional red-ocher designs on flat pebbles. The Field Museum's Hall C group was sculpted by Frederick Blaschke, with a painted background by C. A. Corwin.
