About this postcard

Scale model of a stockaded Indian village at Aztalan, displayed in the Prehistory Room of the Rahr Civic Center and Public Museum in Manitowoc. A thatched-roof house sits at left, a conical structure at center, and a long thatched building at right, with small figures posed in an open sandy compound ringed by a palisade. The museum built the diorama to show how the village on the Crawfish River in Jefferson County may have looked around A.D. 1500. Aztalan is one of Wisconsin's best known archaeological sites, a Middle Mississippian village with platform mounds and a stockade, now preserved as a state park. Dioramas like this one were a common way for small museums of the period to bring prehistory to visitors who would never travel to the site itself.
