Balance Rock glacial boulder, Pittsfield, MA, 1903

Card type
Real photo

About this postcard

Balance Rock, a large glacial erratic left by retreating ice, rests on a smaller stone base in a grassy clearing in Pittsfield. Trees ring the clearing, and the boulder's face carries painted graffiti, including 'THOS. DALY' and 'ACADEMY OF MUSIC.' The rock is a local Berkshire landmark, the kind of natural curiosity that postcard photographers and visitors sought out in the early 1900s.
