About this postcard
A huge red sandstone boulder balances on a narrow, rounded base, with green trees at the left and a pale blue sky behind it. The formation is Balanced Rock in Mushroom Park, just west of Garden of the Gods in the Pike's Peak region of Colorado. The boulder weighs many tons but rests on only a few feet of rock, so it seems almost ready to topple. Garden of the Gods, near Colorado Springs, is known for red sandstone formations shaped by erosion, and Balanced Rock was a familiar stop for travelers touring the region by car. A vacationer's note mentions a mountain picnic and a visit to Garden of the Gods.
