Balanced Rock, Garden of the Gods, Colorado, 1956

About this postcard

Balanced Rock, a large red sandstone boulder perched on a narrow pedestal of layered red stone, rises against a pale sky with green scrub and trees at the left. The formation sits just west of the main Garden of the Gods in Mushroom Park, in the Pike's Peak region, where the many-ton boulder rests on only a few feet of stone and looks almost ready to topple. Balanced rocks of this kind are residual boulders left atop eroded bases, and this one has long been a roadside attraction near Colorado Springs. The sender writes of a picnic in the Colorado mountains and a visit to the Garden of the Gods, a city park known for its red rock formations.
