Balanced Rock, Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, CO, circa 1907

About this postcard

Balanced Rock, a red sandstone boulder perched on a narrow base, rises among pines in the Garden of the Gods at Colorado Springs. A man in a dark suit and cap sits on the sloping rock below, a common way to show the formation's scale. The park's Fountain Formation sandstone has eroded into fins and pedestal rocks, and Balanced Rock was already a tourist landmark when the Garden of the Gods was donated to Colorado Springs in 1909.
