Balanced Rock, Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, Colorado, circa 1935

About this postcard

A massive red sandstone boulder appears to perch precariously atop a narrow base, with a man in a dark suit and cap seated on the sloping rock below to give a sense of scale; pines frame the left side against a pale blue sky. The card names the formation as Balanced Rock in the Garden of the Gods, the celebrated city park at Colorado Springs where erosion of the Fountain Formation sandstone has left a cluster of dramatic red fins and pedestal rocks. Balanced Rock has been a tourist landmark since the park was donated to the city in 1909, and the figure posed beneath it was a standard device for conveying its size.
