Band Stand, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, circa 1907

About this postcard

A large classical bandstand with a broad arch and a colonnade stands in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. A dense crowd in early twentieth-century dress fills the plaza and steps in front, with wooded hills and a pink-tinted sky behind. The structure is the Temple of Music, an Italian Renaissance-style gift from sugar magnate Claus Spreckles, "The Sugar King." Its terraced grounds were built to seat a large concert audience, and Sunday and holiday concerts were a regular draw.
