About this postcard
A domed wooden bandstand or pavilion stands on a lawn at the right, framed by dense trees and beds of low, colorful flowers in the foreground. The setting is Crapo Park in Burlington, Iowa. Crapo Park was laid out in the 1890s on high ground above the Mississippi River on land given by the Crapo family; its landscaped drives, bluffs, and Victorian-era structures made it a favorite local postcard subject. Band concerts in such pavilions were a standard summer entertainment in American city parks of the period. The sender's note from West Burlington mixes work news with a request, reporting that "the greek had quit" and asking that goods be sent C.O.D.
