About this postcard
A view of the gambrel-roofed, clapboard Barbara Fritchie House in Frederick, Maryland, with an American flag hanging from an upper window and a street lamp and fence in the foreground. According to local tradition, the elderly Barbara Fritchie (1766–1862) waved a Union flag from this house as Confederate troops under Stonewall Jackson passed through Frederick in September 1862; the story was popularized by John Greenleaf Whittier's 1863 poem "Barbara Frietchie." The dwelling is preserved as a historic house museum.
