About this postcard

A long red-brick barracks building with a columned central portico and rows of white-trimmed windows stands behind a row of shade trees and a broad green lawn, with Narragansett Bay and a distant shoreline beyond. A sailboat and a small vessel are visible on the water, and an automobile of 1930s–40s style sits on the drive in front. The U.S. Naval Training Station at Newport, Rhode Island, established in 1883 on Coasters Harbor Island, was a principal recruit-training center for the U.S. Navy and remained active through both world wars.
