About this postcard

A crowd gathers on the sidewalk outside the Barter Theatre, a brick playhouse with a marquee and a banner for the Barter Players. The marquee advertises year-round performances and curtain times at 2:00 and 8:00. Robert Porterfield founded the theatre in Abingdon during the Depression, when actors bartered performances for food from local farms. It became the State Theatre of Virginia, and the adjacent Barter Playhouse staged daily children's matinees.
