A crowded beach at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, with bathers and strollers on the sand and spectators seated along the balconies of the pier building. The ocean is visible at left. Steel Pier opened in 1898 and by 1908 was a hub of Atlantic City's summer amusements, drawing vacationers to its beach, shows, and concessions. The sender writes that he arrived the previous evening and is going out bathing, wishing his friend could join him in the water.
