About this postcard
The Battery Park Hotel dominates a landscaped lawn in Asheville, North Carolina. The Queen Anne-style resort has red brick and yellow clapboard walls, a domed corner turret, tall chimneys, gables, and a central tower, with walks, shrubs, and a pergola laid out in front. Colonel Frank Coxe opened the original hotel in 1886 on the site of a Civil War earthwork, and it became Asheville's grand resort; George Vanderbilt is said to have stayed there while Biltmore House was under construction. The wooden building was torn down in 1924 and replaced by a larger brick hotel on the same site.
