About this postcard
View of the Battle Mountain Sanitarium at Hot Springs, South Dakota: a central administration building with a domed red-tile roof flanked by long barracks-like wings, set among lawns, flower beds and a tall flagpole flying the American flag. Opened in 1907 as a branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, the sanitarium treated veterans, particularly those with respiratory complaints, in the mild climate of the southern Black Hills. The complex later passed to the Veterans Administration and remains a landmark of Hot Springs.
